Tobacco Use

Amy Ward, Chair

Smoke Free Cars and Homes has been the focus for 2006-2007.  With the passage of Initiative 901, all public places are smoke free.  But what about protecting our children?  Tobacco Free Benton-Franklin Counties developed a community marketing campaign which includes paid media advertising, using the Youth Advisory Board as volunteers, and participating in community-wide health fairs with giveaways with the message for Smoke Free Cars and Homes.

Another focus has been on chew tobacco.  As tobacco users are no longer allowed to smoke at their worksites, they are taking up tobacco in chew form.  The tobacco industry has also been on the forefront of this change and traditional cigarette companies (Phillip Morris) are now in the chew market.  An awareness campaign will be launched in February for “Through with Chew” week highlighting the dangers of chew and ways to quit.

Tobacco Free continues to work with youth and the Educational Service District #123 as a resource in addition to routine compliance checks to retailers to make sure tobacco does not get in the hands of our youth.

We are committed to helping tobacco users kick the habit through training facilitators, providing classes and coordinating with insurance companies for coverage, and encouraging worksites to offer cessation for their employees.

More people than ever are protected by secondhand smoke with 21 states have smoke free laws and 16 countries being smoke free.  However, the battle of tobacco and health continues and Tobacco Free is committed to making our community healthier.
